The Good Housekeeping Institute has announced the results of its annual Christmas taste test. Which supermarkets have the best products?
Good Housekeeping team has tried 470 products in order to decide the best foods for this year’s Christmas festivities.
M&S has been the overall winner as it came first in four categories: Mince Pies with a Twist, Bottled Cocktails, Dessert Centrepieces and Yule Logs.
M&S is then a clear favourite for sweet treats, but Online butchers Pipers Farm has been named the go-to place for Turkey.
Its best turkeys is Pipers Farm Free Range Bronze Turkey, £16.30 per kilo and Pipers Farm Properly Free Turkey Crown, from £71.
In the Meat-Free Main category, COOK’s Portobello Mushroom Wellington, £10, proved the most popular product.
Plant-based feast, Morrisons Vegan Vegetable Wellington, £5 for 460g, and Tesco’s Wicked Kitchen No Turkey Roast Crown, £5 for 500g, also received very high scores.
A very popular food in any Christmas meal is smoked salmon and this year’s winner is London Smoke & Cure’s Sashimi-Grade Smoked Salmon, £14.95.
Tesco’s Finest Scottish Smoked Salmon, for £4.80, was also named one of the favourites.
Another traditional favourite is Pigs in Blankets and this year’s crown goes to Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Truffle Pigs in Blankets.
In the traditional Mince Pie category, Betty’s Classic Mince Pies, £13.75, had the highest score.
However, an option for coeliacs was also chosen with Costa’s Gluten-Free Vegan Mince Tart, for £2 each, being named the absolute favourite.
In the Mince Pies with a Twist category, M&S’s Sticky Toffee PudPie, with its rich, buttery caramel notes, was the firm favourite.
Waitrose and Aldi were named best supermarket for own-label Champagne and Prosecco.
Waitrose Blanc de Noirs Brut NV Champagne, £23.99, scored 78/100.
However, Perrier Jouet Champagne Grand Brut, sold for £35.00 at Amazon was the winner in the category.
For Prosecco lovers, La Gioiosa, Prosecco DOC, £10 for 75cl sold at Majestic, took the crown but Aldi’s Prosecco DOCG Millesimato, £8.99, was named the second best option.
Head of Food & Drink Testing at the Good Housekeeping Institute, Angela Trofymova, commented on the results.
“As we head towards Christmas 2021, in the hopes that it will be with more friends and family than last year’s, we really wanted to source the best-tasting products for the public.
“We’ve made sure we haven’t missed any of the key festive favourites.
” As well as including new and innovative categories, ensuring consumers get the best deals, treats and drinks they can this year!”
