Senior US officials have warned the UK Government against passing legislation to tear up the Northern Ireland Protocol, threatening to take a possible UK-US free trade deal off the table if it does so.
But former Brexit Party MEP Ben Habib has insisted that, in any case, “there can be no genuine trade deal between these two countries while the Protocol remains”.
He told Express.co.uk: “A trade deal for the UK with the US is a near impossibility for as long as the Protocol exists because Northern Ireland is stuck in the EU’s Single Market for goods. Great Britain might be able to do some sort of the deal, but the UK, as a whole, could not.”
